Latest storm sets wettest month record

10:28 PM PST on Tuesday, November 21, 2006

KING5.com Staff Reports

SEATTLE - It's the wettest November in Western Washington on record. But now we have also reached a new milestone: wettest month ever.

KING 5 meteorologist Jeff Renner said Sea-Tac Airport recorded the record for wettest month at 5:53 p.m. Tuesday at 12.94". By 10 p.m., the number was up to 13.05". The previous records was recorded at 12.92" in January 1953.

Back when they kept records at the Old Federal Building in downtown Seattle, the wettest month ever recorded was 15.33" in December of 1933. KING 5 meteorologist Rich Marriott says we're probably not going to break that record. "But we have a chance because it looks pretty wet between now and the end of the month."

In addition to rain, strong winds are sweeping through the region, but nothing like the winds that hit us last week. The National Weather Service in Seattle has a wind advisory in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday night.

Sustained winds of 25-40 mph swept through the north interior of Western Washington with isolated wind gusts of 60 mph. High winds can topple trees, down power lines and damage some homes and structures. Gale warnings were in effect around Lopez and the San Juan Islands until 4 p.m. Winds gradually subsided in the afternoon.

A low-pressure area will continue to sit off the coast, circulating a series of weather systems into Western Washington, delivering more showers through the end of the week. Snow levels are expected to drop to 2,500 feet and stay there or below until the end of the week, which could great affect travel across the Cascades during Thanksgiving.

"Our mountain passes could be a little tricky to navigate at times this week," says KING 5 meteorologist Chris Warren. (Click on the link above for Chris' mountain travel conditions this week).

Rich expects quite a bit of snow to accumulate in the ski areas through the end of the week.

"As we head into the weekend, we'll see a little bit of a break, a little bit drier air moves in, still a few scattered showers, and cooler over the weekend with highs hovering around 40 degree mark," adds Rich. "Then more rain next week."
