Bundle up for colder weather

10/30/2002

By KING5.com

SEATTLE - The first signs of frost showed up Wednesday morning in the Puget Sound area, but sunny skies will prevail during the day before even colder air arrives overnight.

The Arctic air mass brought frigid air to much of the Pacific Northwest. It was 25 degrees overnight in Kingston, Tumwater and Snohomish, Wash. In Leavenworth, Wash., east of the Cascades, the temperature bottomed out at 14 degrees early Wednesday.

The arrival of dry air probably means not much more snow in the Northwest - just increasingly cold and sunny through Friday.

But it's definitely not the start of ski season quite yet. Cool air alone will dominate the weather in the greater Seattle area.

It's expected to be cold enough that you may want to get out that winter coat right about now. "We might approach record lows at Sea-Tac," KING 5 meteorologist Rich Marriott said. "It's been a while since it's been this cold."

But the cold will diminish during the daytime hours this week. Afternoons will remain sunny, and the highs will approach 50 degrees in many areas.

First Alert Weather
People living away from the waters of Puget Sound will feel the chill the most. Cities such as Bellevue, Isssaquah, Woodinville, Olympia and Lacey will likely be the coldest, especially in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Lows in some communities could drop into the 20s, while it's expected to dip only into the 30s in Seattle.

KREM
Snow fell in Yakima County on Tuesday.
The weather was more dramatic Tuesday to the east as cold air and spotty light snow moved into the Inland Northwest from the Rockies of Montana. This weather pattern was expected to change slightly by the weekend.

"We'll start seeing fog and low clouds over the weekend," Marriott said. As we head into traditionally rainy November, some precipitation might be possible early next week, he said.

Delicate plants may find the harsher weather hard to tolerate, and gardeners are advised to move delicate potted plants inside and throw an old sheet over the ones planted outdoors.
