Which Prop One is which on your ballot?

05:46 PM PDT on Monday, October 22, 2007

By ROBERT MAK / KING 5 News

Most ballots will have the transportation Prop One on the back.

SEATTLE – Do you know how you're going to vote on Proposition One?

If you live in certain areas of western Washington, you may have to vote more than once.  That's because, in addition to the high-profile transportation measure under the name Prop One, some counties have their own measures, also called Prop One.

It's leaving some voters confused.

If you live in the metro areas of King, Pierce or Snohomish Counties, Proposition One is the multi-billion dollar roads and transit package.

In King County, Proposition One is a measure for Medic One emergency services.  It needs 60 percent to pass. Medics are worried that the campaign which is urging people to vote no on the transportation measure will have people voting no on King County's Prop One.

From King to Thurston Counties, from Maple Valley to the Darrington School District, there are countless Prop Ones on the ballot.

So why not call these other Prop Ones, Prop Two instead?

King County Elections workers say the ballot titles are determined by law, and the first ballot measure in each jurisdiction is called Proposition One.

Something else to keep in mind: The special district for the transportation measure extends across three counties, but it's only in the metro area, so not everyone can vote on it.

Also, that transportation Prop One could be on the back of your ballot.  By state law, state and county measures come first, then the special districts towards the end.
