Seattle group goes national with JibJab.com sketch

07:59 AM PDT on Friday, October 20, 2006

By GREG COPELAND / NWCN

SEATTLE - Some Northwest actors are hoping to make the big time with a small sketch.  Their script was chosen to be part of the 'Great Sketch Experiment' hitting the popular web site JibJab.com as part of a national competition.

John Boyle, Kaci Aitchison and Ryan Miller are the trio behind the group Train of Thought.  They do most of their performing on stage at the Northwest Actors Studio on Seattle's Capitol Hill.

It's sketch comedy - think SNL and Kids in the Hall on a smaller scale.  But they hope today's launch on JibJab.com could open some doors.

Jibjab.com made a name for itself with those Flash cartoons poking fun of the 2004 presidential race. Its creators launched a national competition of 60 entrants and only six were selected. The Seattle sketch Boyle wrote a couple months ago was one of them.

The rules of the Jibjab.com competition: The sketch had to be 3-5 minutes long and centered at a police station or prison. Seattle writer John Boyle chose an interrogation room.

"I couldn't believe it," says Boyle.  "There's Greg and Evan, the JibJab founders, on the speaker phone with me, like, you won! You're comin' to LA! It was crazy."

The rules: the clips have to be 3-5 minutes and the sketch had to be centered on a police station or prison. John chose an interrogation room.

In their sketch titled "Tom and Tina," Boyle takes a little beating.  That bit was added by Hollywood director John Landis, who brought the scripts to life and made a few changes to each. It's a far cry from their normal gig - a handful of rehearsals a month, taking turns in each other's living room.

"I don't know what you're talking about," laughs Miller. "I think a living room is a great place to rehearse."

"I love the underdog story. I love being the little engine that could," says Boyle.

But these underdogs weren't about to be intimidated by those other groups from LA and NY.

"I had confidence in our piece. I had confidence in our ability to do it and my job was to go down there and knock it out," says Miller.

As for where things go from here, Boyle says anything's possible.

"I have no idea what'll happen," says Boyle.  "We're putting stuff together just in case. (Knocks on wood) But who knows.  We're excited we're going to be on the national stage, and that's something I never would have dreamed of a year ago.

You can view their sketch "Tom and Tina" yourself and vote beginning this morning on JibJab.com.  The competition runs through November 16.
