Tank catches fire at Anacortes refinery
06:07 PM PDT on Friday, October 19, 2007
ANACORTES, Wash. - Just after noon today, a the tank holding some 2.4 million gallons of diesel caught fire at the Shell Puget Sound Refinery in Anacortes.
"There were two employees working near the tank at the time, and they were the ones that noticed the fire and got out of the area immediately," said Jaunty Rutter, a spokesperson.
He says as workers evacuated that section of the plant, firefighters moved in, showering the fire with 1,300 gallons of foam. They also sprayed the walls of the tank with water to keep them cool.
At the same time, fuel was pumped out into other tanks, but not before the flames burned a gaping hole in one.
"The damage to the tank is really along the seal between the roof and the tank wall," Rutter said.

Just after 2 p.m. firefighters gave the "all clear". The two workers who spotted the fire suffered a few scrapes as they rushed to escape and a firefighter suffered a minor cut.
"All three of them were treated here by our medical staff, and we're thankful they're all doing well. it wasn't anything major," Rutter said.
