Man on cell phone blamed for I-5 crash

03:21 PM PDT on Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Associated Press

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, Wash. - The Washington State Patrol blames a 29-year-old Lynnwood man trying to talk on his cell phone for a head-on collision on Interstate 5 that snarled the morning commute on Wednesday.

Trooper Keith Leary says the accident occurred just before 8 a.m. as the man was headed north just north of the King County line.

Four southbound lanes of I-5 were blocked for about 30 minutes following the crash.

Three people were taken to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

It's against the law in Washington state to drive while using a cell phone, except for phones equipped with handsfree devices. The fine against breaking the law is $124.
