UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – A balcony crowded with people collapsed at a
party in Pierce County.
Medics rushed six patients to Tacoma area hospitals – two of them in
critical condition.
KING Sixteen people were on the balcony when it fell.
The balcony apparently broke away from a house in University Place on
82nd Avenue Court West.
It happened without warning at a going-away party for a young Navy
recruit when suddenly the balcony gave way without warning and plunged
12 feet down.
Sixteen people were on the deck of the Jackson family's University Place
home.
"The bottom just gave out," said homeowner Nancy Jackson. "Didn't even
know it was happening for a second."
"The first thing I though was earthquake and didn't realize the deck was
falling," said Navy recruit Paul Jackson. "As soon as it hit, I didn't
know if I was hurt or not, I just wished I could have done more to help
others."
The most critically hurt person was Paul Jackson's grandfather, who was
taken to Tacoma General Hospital. He later died of his injuries.
There was no one underneath the deck when it fell. The cause appears to
be structure failure.
