ALGER, Wash. – The community of Alger is raising money and spirits this weekend.

They're holding a benefit for the victims of last month's shooting spree.

And they're hoping to help heal a deep community wound.

"Instead of going into a deep sorrow as a community, we wanted to be proactive and do something about it," organizer Dawn Thomas said.

Last month, the town was the scene of multiple murders. Alger resident Isaac Zamora is charged with the crimes that left six people dead and four injured.

Debbie Winblad's son, Greg Gillum, was one of the murder victims.

"This is just a reminder to me that it's real, and I thank all the people that put the effort to do this, because a lot of them don't even know the victims, they're just doing it out of the kindness of their heart," Winblad said.

This weekend the town pulled together, looking for brighter days.

One hundred percent of the proceeds go to victims' families.

"This is a community that was hurt very badly by that tragedy and we kind of all just get together and try to make things a little easier on the people that were left behind," volunteer Tom Logsdon said.

The fundraiser will be in full swing tomorrow between noon and 6 p.m. at the Alger Community Center.

Events include a rummage sale, raffle and children's activities.
