Fort Lewis soldier killed when Stryker vehicle hit explosive

01:32 PM PDT on Sunday, October 8, 2006

Associated Press

TACOMA, Wash. - A Fort Lewis soldier was killed in Mosul, Iraq, when his Stryker vehicle hit an improvised explosive device, according to a published report.

The soldier, whose name was not immediately released, died Saturday and was with the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, The (Tacoma) News Tribune reported.

The military did not immediately release any further details about the soldier's death, the newspaper said.

David Kuhns, a spokesman at Fort Lewis, an Army post south of Tacoma, said Sunday that he could not confirm The News Tribune's report, noting that all information about casualties is issued by the U.S. Department of Defense.

The latest soldier killed was the fourth from Fort Lewis to die in Mosul since the brigade deployed in July. Two others were killed in Baghdad, and one died in a vehicle accident in Qayarrah, south of Mosul.
