RENTON, Wash. - Striking Boeing machinists are settling in for the long haul.

"I think this one will break the record of '95, which was 69 days," said 33-year Boeing tool maker John Gilham, who has weathered several strikes.

One of his issues is the outsourcing of jobs to Boeing subcontractors.

In Auburn, Theresa Miller just got the news that she will be laid off.

Her non-profit company "Skills" is a Boeing subcontractor that hires disabled workers to make airplane parts. Miller says she was one of 70 laid off.

There is no fat to cut from her budget. She worries about paying next month's rent.

"I don't want to be without work, I love my job," she said. "I hate to be asking family, they don't have the money."

Boeing workers are striking for a bigger wage hike than the 11 percent over three years offered by the company, plus better pensions and benefits.  They're also fighting for job security.

But the picket line is painful for newly-hired Boeing mechanic Adam Gosselim.

"Zero days on the job, 30 days on strike so far," he said.

He arrived right when machinists began striking.  Now, he's earning no income to provide for his toddler and his pregnant wife.

"What can you do? Can't cross the line. Hope they'll go back to the tables and work something out," he said.

No new talks are scheduled.

Boeing officials say they've hired temporary workers for facilities and janitorial positions, and hired temps for similar jobs in previous strikes.
