ROCHESTER, Wash. – Two people were killed this morning when a semi truck and a passenger vehicle collided on I-5 in south Thurston County.

The collision occurred at roughly 11 a.m. at milepost 88, according to Washington State Patrol.

Witnesses say it was raining when a brown 1995 Subaru Legend was traveling southbound on I-5 in the right lane. When traffic began to slow, the Subaru braked and lost control, traveling across the left lane, through the median, under the cable barrier and into the northbound lanes.

The Subaru struck a 2007 Freightliner semi-truck head-on and was pushed back into the median.

The female driver and her male passenger, Karl Heiss of Moyie Springs, Idaho, were killed. Two children were airlifted to Harborview Medical Center with injuries. The driver and children have not been identified.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

Traffic was backed up for several miles in the area and motorists were warned to expect delays.
