Man caught sleeping on stolen goods gets 9 months

01:23 PM PDT on Saturday, September 27, 2008

Associated Press

EVERETT, Wash. - One of two men photographed sleeping on goods stolen from a department store in Monroe has been sentenced to nine months in jail.

Monroe Police

A suspected burglar is caught sleeping on some of the goods allegedly stolen from a department store break-in in Monroe, Wash.

In addition, 27-year-old Allen Pierce was sentenced Friday to repay the Fred Meyer outlet for losses from the burglary July 9.

After the break-in, police followed a trail of cardboard and other items to Pierce and 25-year-old Kyle Burress. Police photographs of the pair sleeping on stolen merchandise were widely circulated in televised, Internet and print news reports.

Both pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary, and Burress was sentenced earlier to 30 days.

Snohomish County Deputy Prosecutor Coleen St. Clair says Pierce has been building a long rap sheet, but maybe the embarrassment of the pictures will help him steer clear of crime in the future.
