Bedbugs found at Oregon hospital

08:01 AM PDT on Thursday, September 25, 2008

Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. - Bedbugs have shown up at Oregon Health & Science University.

Hospital spokeswoman Liana Haywood says the seed-size bugs were found last weekend crawling from a fanny pack that had been stored with other patients' belongings for two weeks.

Others were spotted in offices around the patient admitting area.

Bedbugs hide in furniture, floors and walls during the day and emerge at night. They suck blood, leaving itchy welts. Studies show they aren't effective carriers of human diseases.

Haywood says pest-control workers are removing all office furniture for offsite decontamination. The admitting area has been moved.

The hospital disposed of the mattress used by the fanny pack owner and steam-cleaned the room as a precaution.
