Public invited to help name Seattle parks
11:28 AM PDT on Wednesday, September 10, 2008
SEATTLE – Seattle residents are invited to brainstorm names for three parks in the Capitol Hill and Sand Point neighborhoods.
Suggestions must be submitted to the Park Naming Committee by Oct. 27, 2008. In selecting names they will consider criteria such as the park's geographical location, historical or cultural significance and natural or geological features.
-The first park is a .39-acre parcel located at the northeast corner of East Howell Street and 16th Avenue East on Capitol Hill. The preferred plan for the site includes a crushed rock plaza and pathway lined with trees, a garden walk, steps, a plaza and benches. Construction is set to begin in the fall.
-The second park is located on the NE corner of East John Street and Summit Avenue East on the western slope on Capitol Hill. Design ideas for the .22-acre site include a p-patch, lawn areas and a plaza.
-The last park is located at 7400 Sand Point Way NE in Warren G. Magnuson Park. It includes one synthetic surface rugby field, two soccer fields, a Little League field and an adult baseball field. Construction will be completed in 2009.
The committee says a park can be named for someone who has made a contribution to parks and recreation if that person has been deceased for a minimum of three years.
The group will review suggestions and make a recommendation to the superintendent, who will have the final say.
Suggestions can be submitted to Seattle Parks and Recreation, Park Naming Committee, 100 Dexter Ave. N., Seattle, WA, 98109, or by e-mail to paula.hoff@seattle.gov.
Participants must include an explanation of how their suggestion matches the naming criteria.
