Port Orchard area espresso stands hit by burglar

08:40 PM PDT on Wednesday, August 27, 2008

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. - Detectives think the burglar who hit the Chug a Tug early last Thursday morning shot nine BB's at the stand to see if there was an alarm.

When all was quiet, the place was cleaned out of hundreds of dollars in cash.

"We're a lot more cautious and a little bit more scared," said barista Candice Brown.

She's speaking for baristas like Jasseka Norman.

Overnight Saturday, her Port Orchard stand was also robbed. This time the thieves got thousands of dollars.

"I bring pepper spray to work now that this happened," said Norman.

That same night, Kris Klusman's Belfair espresso stand, The Coffee Spot, about 10 miles away, was also broken into. This time the thieves ripped out the safe, which contained thousands of dollars in cash.

"It just puts a little insecurity in people knowing these things do happen in a local area, quiet neighborhood," said Klusman.

It's not clear if the burglaries are connected, but police say all three should remind business owners what happens when cash is kept on-site, unguarded.

"Unfortunately I think a lot of these smaller businesses because they're opening up and employees need to have cash it's readily available so they're leaving fairly serious amounts of money in the business and we try to discourage that," said Commander Geoffrey Marti of Port Orchard Police.

The victims of this recent rash of burglaries are increasing security and decreasing the amount of money left overnight.

Detectives are hoping someone will come forward with information because they don't have a lot to work with.

The Chug a Tug and the Jump Start Java up the hill have surveillance cameras, but neither camera got a shot of the burglar or burglars.

The Belfair espresso stand has a loud alarm that usually can be heard blocks away, but for some reason it didn't go off when the burglary occurred over the weekend.
