Beacon Hill told don't drink the water

SEATTLE – Residents in a 30 block area of the Beacon Hill neighborhood are being advised not to drink or cook with tap water after a two-inch pipe broke Wednesday.

Seattle Public Utilities says up to 460 customers were affected by the outage. Water service was restored at about 10:15 a.m., but due to possible contamination, customers are asked not to use the water for at least 24 hours while the city conducts tests.

The boundaries for the water advisory are:

-- Bennett Street to the north

-- 16th Avenue to the east

-- 13th Avenue to the west

-- Graham Street to the south

Until the tests are done, SPU will be giving away free bottled water starting at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of Cleveland High School at 5511 15th Ave S.

If you must use tap water, you’re advised to boil it first using these instructions:

-- Strain the water through either a cheesecloth, coffee filter, or other clean, porous material to remove as many solid particles and dirt as possible

-- Bring the water to a rolling boil for one minute

-- Let the water cool. Pour into a container that has been boiled or sanitized with chlorine bleach

SPU originally said the pipe broke during construction, but later said that was not the case and was still investigating.
