Spokane woman sentenced in 2001 UW firebombing

SEATTLE - A Spokane woman was sentenced Tuesday to three years in federal prison for the 2001 firebombing of the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture.

Lacey Phllabaum, 33, is one of five members of an ecoterrorism group called the Earth Liberation Front who were accused by federal prosecutors of firebombing the building. Prosecutors say the ELF cell believed a scientist at the UW was doing genetic engineering work, which they deemed dangerous to the environment, reported the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

In a plea deal with the U.S. Attorney's office in Seattle, Phillabaum pleaded guilty to the crime in 2006 in exchange for a 36-month sentence. Her role in the crime was reportedly hauling the firebomb to the Urban Horticulture Center. Phillabaum's sentence is the second lowest of a dozen members of the EFL sentenced for the UW arson or other arson attacks.

Jennifer Kolar, another member of the ELF cell, pleaded guilty to the UW arson along with Phillabaum. She was sentenced to five years in prison, since she also played a role in other arsons at an Oregon meat packing plant, a Colorado gun club whose members killed prairie dogs for sport, and a federal wild and burro facility, where animals scheduled to be killed for grazing on federal lands were kept.

Briana Waters was sentenced in June to six years in prison. Like Kolar, she was found guilty of participating in other arsons.

Two other alleged ELF members in the UW firebombing include, William Rodgers, who killed himself in a county jail in Prescott, Ariz., in 2005 after being arrested for the UW arson, and Jefferson County resident Justin Solondz, currently a fugitive.
