SPD meth task force recovers slew of stolen loot

Police uncovered a dizzying array of stolen goods.

SEATTLE - It started as a crackdown on meth-heads, but in the end Seattle police and federal investigators netted a ton of cash, drugs and stolen goods.

Today police unveiled the results of a seven-month undercover sting called "Operation Crystal Blue Persuasion," which was completed in cooperation with the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration.

During their sweep of the city's meth dealers and users, they uncovered a dizzying display of stolen loot: handguns, assault rifles, plasma TVs, computers, laptops, luxury cars, even a thermal imaging unit.

Investigators found a trend they had suspected all along.

"The people involved in these cases were involved in identity theft, involved in auto theft, involved in burglary and all types of other crimes," said police chief Gil Kerlikowske.

On top of all the stolen goods, police recovered half a million dollars in cash and $1 million in drugs. Experts say some of the illegal activities were part of the high; some found it to be a thrill.

Police and sheriff deputies have rounded up more than 80 suspects in connection to all the loot; the goal is to arrest 162.

Prosecutors say some suspects face the likelihood of federal prison time.

Seattle police say these and other pro-active operations are working. They say at current rates, auto thefts and burglaries are set to drop by 20 percent this year compared to last.

However, in both categories the total number will still be above 6,000, meaning at least 15 auto thefts and burglaries every single day.

Police say while the drug deals usually went down in Seattle, the criminals stole all over -  from Des Moines to Everett and even out in Richland and Yakima.
