Local website hooks up people for lunch -- just to talk

Beth Goza, Deepak Singh and Alex Wishkoski meet for lunch at a Seattle restaurant after connecting on Noonhat.com, a website where people connect just to have lunch.

SEATTLE – At an Italian restaurant in the Belltown neighborhood, 28-year-old Alex Wishkoski meets 36-year-old Beth Goza and 33-year-old Deepak Singh for the first time.

"I think it's a great way to break up the day," says Alex.

"It's about meeting people, but it's hopefully about meeting people that aren't exactly like you," says Beth.

"I've never had lunch with a stranger before," says Deepak.

They took a gamble and gave a new website a try – a site that brings lunch partners to the same table.

What happens after that is anyone's guess.

"To me, this is like the analog version of Facebook or Myspace, which is I'm meeting people and learning what they're interested in, but I'm doing it in person," says Beth.

"I think it's a good way to get out of the office, express some new ideas, and when you talk with people from new backgrounds, there are no constraints on conversation," says Alex.

Alex, Beth and Deepak say there was a little bit of trepidation in doing this, but that the idea of trying something new overwhelmed all of that.  Plus, it broke that day-to-day lunch rut.

"I eat at my desk half the time, literally," says Deepak.

Brian Dorsey is the self-professed computer geek who created noonhat.com as a hobby.

Pick a date, choose an area, then he'll put you in touch with some people you can break bread with.

"All I know is where the people are going to be at lunch time, what day, and that they want to have a good conversation," says Brian.

Hopefully, some spicy conversation will be on the menu.

"It's easy to read the news you agree with, talk to the people you already you know.  I'm hoping to mix things up a bit," says Brian. "Talk to people outside of our normal circles and meet in person, not just at the computer."

"The thing I liked about this concept is that it's so simple," says Deepak.  "You really don't have to do that much.  There's no pressure on you to go find or chase people down."

You never know exactly who's going to show up.  You might not even know their ages or gender.

And there's an easy out if the lunch is a bust.

"You just ask for the check and walk away," says Beth.

But today's sit down went off great.
