Video: Family dogs targeted with gun

WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash. - The Island County Sheriff's Office is investigating two shootings in the last week that left two dogs with serious injuries.

The shootings happened in the rural areas of Clinton and Freeland, and investigators say there's a good chance they are connected.

What sounded like fireworks Monday turned out to be gunshots and Thomas – Sally Sadler's friendly mutt – took one of the bullets.

"Nobody could mistake him for a coyote... and there's no livestock around if he was chasing livestock," she sad.

Someone armed with a .22 caliber gun shot Thomas in the shoulder, shattering the bones in his joint and the neighborhood's sense of security.

Sadler might have thought the shooting was an accident, but a few days earlier and a few miles away, another dog was shot.

Maybelline, the Rice family's purebred corgi, was shot in the back. The bullet fragmented throughout the pup's abdomen.

It is believed the gun used to shoot Maybelline also was a .22.

"It's really scary… because our kids are out here all the time playing," said Brad Rice.

The vet believes Maybelline will be OK, but there is a good chance that Thomas's leg will need to be amputated.
