SEATTLE – Woodland Park Zoo officials say their Asian elephant appears to be behaving normally after having a miscarriage Thursday afternoon.

The Zoo says 41-year-old Chai was in her first trimester of pregnancy when the miscarriage happened. The gestation period for elephants is 22 months.

"As in all mammals, miscarriages are not uncommon, especially during the first trimester," explained Woodland Park Zoo General Curator Dr. Nancy Hawkes.
