Man dies in pedicab crash
10:36 PM PDT on Wednesday, August 6, 2008
SEATTLE – A deadly crash involving a pedicab and a minivan left three people trapped underneath the wreckage.
The collision happened Wednesday evening in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood at the corner of Western and Cedar.
Two people were rushed to Harborview Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say the pedicab may have had equipment failure causing it to swerve into oncoming traffic.
Jeff Kreutz was one of several witnesses trying to pull three people out from underneath a van.
"She was talking kind gibberishly, talking up to me, looking at me. I told her to take a deep breath and try to relax," he said.
Police say a pedicab, driven by a 23-year-old, was cruising westbound on the sidewalk, went through a red light and into oncoming traffic.
"The pedicab entered the intersection, had minor collision with the scooter, and much more serious collision with the van," said Jeff Kappel, Seattle Police.
The impact somehow threw the three people on the pedicab under the van.
Aid crews were able to pull the driver and a 60-year-old woman out, but her male companion died at the scene.
The driver of the van, a 20-year-old man, was seen clearly distraught at the scene.
Police say it appears that the pedicab, which was coming down a hill, simply could not stop before it collided with oncoming traffic.
"We are investigating the possibility the pedicab had some sort of equipment failure," said Kappel.
It is unclear if anyone will be cited.
