Seattle shooting suspect has contradictory past
09:51 PM PDT on Monday, July 31, 2006
SEATTLE - Prosecutors will decide formal murder charges this week against Naveed Haq, the man accused of going on a shooting rampage inside the Jewish Federation offices in Seattle last Friday that left one person dead and five others wounded.
AP
Naveed Afzal Haq appears in the courtroom after being booked into the King County Jail.
Although Naveed Haq has been portrayed as a Muslim American angry at Israel, he recently converted to another religion. According to published reports, Haq recently converted to Christianity and was baptized last December.
Suspect's family call shootings 'senseless act'
Victim's children talk about their mother
Family, friends rally around survivors
The latest news about Haq is just one of several contradictions. Acquaintances say Haq was a man who just couldn't get things together, but they and family members also say they never thought he was capable of violence.
According to Haq's web page on Friendster.com, he describes himself as a normal 30-year-old guy who likes to exercise and hang out with friends. The Tri-Cities native says being opinionated is not for him, but he leans on the liberal side. He explains he doesn't do anything real crazy and is looking to meet easy going people, and people with felonies need not seek his company.
Haq currently sits in the King County Jail on $50 million bail, facing the possibility of capital murder charges.
Sources tell KING 5 News Haq purchased a gun at a Sportsman Warehouse in Kennewick on Thursday. Seattle Police said Haq on Friday forced his way into the Jewish Federal Building in downtown Seattle and began shooting, killing a woman and injuring five other people.
According to court documents, Haq told 911 operators "These are Jews and I'm tired of getting pushed around and our people getting pushed around by the situation in the Middle East."
Over the weekend, Haq's family in the Tri-Cities reacted to their son's arrest. The Haq family said they always believed and practiced fostering love, peace and harmony, irrespective of religion, race and ethnicity. They suggest they never saw the violent hate crime their son is now accused of.
Devoted Muslims, Haq's family expressed complete devastation about the shootings. They issued the following statement: "We could not have imagined for a moment that our son would do this senseless act. This is utterly contrary to our beliefs and Islamic values."
"Our hearts and condolences go to the family of the deceased lady. Our deepest sympathies go to those who have been injured and we pray for their speedy recovery."
The Haq family attorney said Haq has had a history of mental illness.
"He takes medication for bi-polar," said Larry Stephenson, Haq family attorney. "He has a pretty difficult mental illness that's been with him for about 10 years now."
Memorial for shooting victim Monday
The children of Pam Waechter, the woman killed in Friday's shootings, are still reeling from the loss of their mother. Nicole Waechter Guzman and her brother Mark say they find some peace in knowing their mother lived her life to the fullest and described her as a vibrant world traveler and devoted servant to her faith.
A memorial service will be held Monday for Pam Waechter at 1 p.m. at Temple B'Nai Torah in Bellevue.
Victims recovering
Three of the shooting victims remain in stable condition at the intensive care unit at Harborview Medical Center.
At last report, Dana Klein, the pregnant woman who was shot in the arm, was in satisfactory condition, and her baby was doing fine. Christina Rexroad, 29, underwent surgery on Sunday. Cheryl Stumbo, 43, was listed in serious condition.
