'Lack of remorse' lands teen in jail for rape

10:09 AM PDT on Sunday, July 27, 2008

By Associated Press

SEATTLE -- A teenager faces more time than usual in juvenile detention for his attitude after pleading guilty to involvement in the rape of a 16-year-old girl with three other teenagers.

King County Juvenile Court Judge Michael Hayden sentenced the 17-year-old from Federal Way to more than three years for his "utter lack of remorse."

After the girl reported the rape in November, police arrested the 17-year-old and three other teens after finding postings about the episode on the online networking site MySpace.com.

In court, Hayden noted that a pre-sentence report quoted the 17-year-old as calling the girl a liar. Other documents also indicated he was not amenable to treatment and showed no concern for the girl.

Hayden also revealed the girl, 16 at the time of the rape, became pregnant and later had an abortion.

The boy sobbed as the judge told him he would remain in custody until he turns 21.

"I just want to say I'm sorry," he sobbed. "I'm really sorry for what happened."

The teenager's boy's mother, speaking through a Russian interpreter, said her son was remorseful.

"He is very upset about what happened," the mother said. "He would never do this against anyone's will forcefully."

The mother said the family agreed to have the boy marry the girl and raise the child, adding that her son was angry at the girl because abortion is against his religion.

"And rape doesn't?" the judge asked, getting no response.

According to investigators, the four teenagers got the girl drunk, took turns raping her in the back of a car, then later talked about killing the girl to prevent her from testifying against them.

Two were sentenced to lesser terms in June. One got a year in custody and the other, who cooperated with police, got 15 to 36 weeks. The fourth is scheduled for sentencing in August.
