ARLINGTON, Wash. – A group of moms became impromptu firefighters in an effort to save a school from an arsonist Wednesday night.

The fire at Lakewood Elementary School started just before 7 p.m.

The Marysville Fire Department says the moms were walking on the track at nearby Lakewood High School when they saw smoke and flames near the gymnasium.

The moms sprung into action. They broke open windows to get access to fire extinguishers inside the classrooms to keep the fire from going to the roof until firefighters arrived. Another person in the area also used their own fire extinguisher.

Once firefighters arrived, they pulled tiling to provide ventilation and were able to put out the fire that had spread from the outside to the attic.

The moms were able to beat back the flames until firefighters arrived. On the ground, you can see the extinguishers the women used.

Two classrooms were damaged. A fire captain said the fire could have been much worse and was just minutes away from becoming a large scale attic fire.

Investigators say someone setting fire to combustibles next to the school is to blame for the fire. Damage is estimated at $150,000.

One of the women suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene.

The moms are being commended for their help, but firefighters remind you get to safety if a fire becomes too large and dangerous to handle yourself.

The Arson Alarm Foundation is offering up to a $10,000 reward for information on this arson. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-55-arson.
