Half-naked dad arrested after boys abandoned in Salem car
03:47 PM PDT on Wednesday, July 25, 2007
SALEM, Ore. - In a bizarre string of events Tuesday morning, two young boys were found abandoned in a car in Salem and then several hours later, police arrested their father after he was caught sleeping in an SUV parked inside a garage just one block away.
A judge will decide who should get custody of the two young boys.
Their father, 33-year-old Blaine Danley, remains in jail on burglary and child neglect charges. Danley has had custody of the boys and their five-month-old sister for the past month. The mother of the children has a history of drug and theft convictions but detectives said they do not think she had anything to do with the alleged abandonment of her sons.
The Marion County family court judge was expected to make the custodial ruling Wednesday afternoon.
The two boys were found in the parked car in the 4900 block of Mink Court NE in Salem, around 1 a.m. Tuesday by an area resident. Then, police quickly sent photos of the boys to media outlets and investigators were able to track down the boys' grandmother who confirmed their identities.
Theresa Ford told police her grandsons had been in their father's custody for the past month and the mother's whereabouts were unknown. Then, while police were still following leads from the grandmother, they got a strange 9-1-1 call that actually led them straight to the dad.

A person living near where the boys were found said a man was sleeping in the back seat of their SUV, which was parked in the garage of their home. Police said grease was spread all over the garage and when they arrived to investigate, the suspect was covered in grease as well. He was arrested on burglary charges and identified as the boys' father, Blaine Danley.
The boys, ages two and three, were taken into protective custody. They had been inside a two-door 1996 Hyundai Accent with Oregon license plates YVD-804, sitting in car seats. Police have not said if that car belonged to Danley.
Police said Danley has a criminal record. Last March, he entered a guilty plea to a harrassment charge in Marion County. He was sentenced to 18 months probation. In 2000 he was convicted on a burglary charge in Yamhill County. At the time he lived in Sheridan.
In this most recent incident, police said Danley has been charged with burglary and he will likely face child abandonment charges as well.

Police searching for mother
Investigators are trying to find the mother of the two young boys.
Detectives identified the mother as 26-year-old Summer Marie Faith Clyborne and she has a criminal record that dates back to 2001.
Police want to question Clyborne about the current situation with the children.
