The 18-year-old horse, Lacey, was lifted to safety with harnesses, ropes and straps.

Seabeck, Wash. – It took more than six hours and 20 people to rescue a horse that fell down a 45-foot ravine Saturday afternoon on Gold Mountain.

Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue aided in the rescue of the horse, 18-year-old Lacey, after she fell off a trail. The 9-1-1 call came in at about 3:18 p.m.

Rescuers found the horse on her back, pinned down between rocks, the embankment and a large log. The Department of Natural Resources ATV unit, Mason 2 Fire Department, the Horse Harbor Foundation and friends of the horse owner all assisted in the rescue.

Firefighters needed a chainsaw to break through the log, relieving pressure on the horse. At roughly 6:45 p.m., Lacey was back on her feet.

Removing her from the ravine took another two hours. Crews used harnesses, ropes and a pulley system to lift her out.

Lacey was able to walk more than two miles down the mountain where a vet examined a large gash on her rear quarter.

The full extent of her injuries is not known at this time.
