Assisted suicide initiative likely to make WA ballot
11:02 AM PDT on Wednesday, July 2, 2008
KING
OLYMPIA, Wash. - Supporters of an assisted-suicide initiative are turning in their last big batch of signatures in Olympia today, and they predict they'll have enough to make the ballot in November.
Initiative 1000 supporters say they've got about 310,000 signatures. At least 225,000 valid signatures of registered voters are needed to qualify for on the ballot, but campaigns aim for thousands more as insurance.
I-1000 mirrors Oregon's assisted suicide law, which took effect in 1997. If Washington voters approve, I-1000 would let terminally ill people who meet certain qualifications get a prescription for lethal drugs from a doctor.
Supporters have raised more than $1.1 million and opponents have raised about $88,000.
Washington voters rejected a physician-assisted suicide law in 1991.
