SEATTLE – Here's proof that the smallest acts can bring about the biggest change.

This time last year, childhood friends Laura D'Asaro and Hilary Lim of Seattle spent last summer selling lemonade and cookies along the Burke Gilman Trail to raise money towards improving their favorite childhood spot, Matthews Beach Park.

"We never thought we'd raise $13,000 selling lemonade," said Laura, but they pulled it off and still had $2,000 left over.

"I'm so excited, I can't wait," said Hilary. "We've been looking forward to this ever since we started selling the lemonade."

Laura D'Asaro and Hilary Lim watch at Matthews Beach Park in Seattle as a construction crew installs playground equipment, paid for by the $13,000 in lemonade they sold last summer.

The two sat on a park bench Tuesday, watching a construction crew start putting the six pieces together. It will include a digger, spring riders and a merry-go-round. Laura and Hilary interviewed kids who will use the equipment to find out what they wanted.

Laura and Hilary say they now know they're capable of doing anything they set their minds to.

"Before this project I thought 'I am just a kid.' Now, I look for things that need to be changed and try to change them," said Laura.

A spring rider in the shape of a whale is one of the six new pieces of equipment the girls bought for the playground.

The girls tell us they plan to use the additional $2,000 towards a park bench or another project.

This Friday, the girls will give away lemonade and cookies along the Burke Gilman Trail to thank all those who donated.
