South Seattlewomen on edge after several rapes
10:53 PM PDT on Friday, June 20, 2008
SEATTLE – It's called the Jungle – the sprawling stretch of homeless camps running under I-5 along the base of Beacon Hill.
Police say at least two men have been using the Jungle as their hunting ground for rape.
A man was arrested Friday morning for the rape of two women, but police are still looking for another man believed to be responsible for two more attacks.
Police believe they have the man responsible for two attacks Friday morning, but they do not believe he is the suspect in a pair of assaults earlier this month.
So this weekend, extra Seattle police will be patrolling these brambles, and scouting under bridges.
"They are going to be actively seeking out potential additional victims, and also obviously an aggressive attempt to apprehend the suspect," said Jeff Kappel, Seattle Police.
Every few years, attempts are made to clean out the Jungle where sanitation is non-existent, drug use is rampant, and violent crime is frequent.
But because the shadowy stretch of maze-like paths is out of public view, the problems of the Jungle and those who live there are easily forgotten.
But by adding more officers in the area this weekend, it shows the women who call the Jungle home are not being left to fend for themselves.
"So we want to have an extra presence in the areas that have been hit," said Kappel.
In addition to policing the Jungle this weekend, officers will also be able to help direct people to shelters and other social services. Most of them won't go, however, but at least for now women may feel a bit safer in the Jungle.
