Winnebago ripped open in deadly collision

11:55 AM PDT on Monday, June 18, 2007

The crashed ripped open the driver's side of the Winnebago.

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. – The driver of a Winnebago was killed when the RV crossed into oncoming traffic Monday morning, hitting a tanker truck.

Washington State troopers say the driver of the tanker, which was loaded with diesel, tried to avoid the crash on SR 536 at about 7 a.m.  There wasn't enough room on the shoulder and the tanker hit the Winnebago on the driver's side, causing part of the motorhome to tear open.

The RV driver was a 56-year-old Anacortes man.  No one else was in the Winnebago.

The tanker driver was not hurt.

None of the diesel in the tanker spilled, but the two lane highway was closed while the fuel was removed from the truck.
