Do you ever wonder if you'd be happier working someplace else? There's a new Web site that offers some insight into thousands of companies by offering a snapshot about what it's like to work there.

Glassdoor.com was launched just a couple of days ago by current and former Seattle residents. You'll find candid reviews and salary information about a lot of local companies. It's information that otherwise might be hard to find.

What is it really like to work for companies like Boeing, Microsoft, or Starbucks? If you wanted to work someplace, what would happen if you walked up to an employee and asked, 'How much do you make?'

It's rude to ask, at the same time you'd probably want to know.

"I'd always like to know that," said Joe, Seattle resident. "Everybody wants to know what the other guy makes. Kind of gives you a bargaining chip."

That's the idea behind Glassdoor.com. It works by requiring users to anonymously share their salary information and workplace reviews in order to reveal what other people are saying about their own companies. You can find reviews on thousands of companies. The site was created by two former Seattle residents who say they're filling a void.

"Work is such an important part of our lives, but it's so hard to get good, actionable insight into what it's like to work for a company or what I should be paid," said Robert Hohman, CEO of Glassdoor.com.

It's one tool to shed light on what can sometimes be a dimly lit path to a new career.

The operators of the Glassdoor.com review all of the postings. They say they reject about 14% of them, mostly because they violate community guidelines or appear to be bogus. In the six days the site has been running, people have already posted more than 30,000 reviews of close to 7,000 companies.
