Tulalip horse rescuers need new home

The operation cares for roughly 20 horses.

TULALIP, Wash. - A Snohomish County horse rescue operation is scrambling to find a new home after receiving an eviction notice.

The Equine Rescue Association has less than two weeks to move, since the owner of its land has decided to sell.

By June 18, it hopes to find at least five acres of land with water, electricity and phone service for the more 20 horses in its care.

If the rescuers can't find help soon, owner Vel Moore says some horses may be put down.

"The horses could be destroyed if there's not someone to take care of them," she said.

For 10 years, Moore has run the non-profit rescue association, which serves as a retirement home for aging show and race horses. It uses volunteer staff and donated supplies.

Moore and several volunteers have spent countless hours to give the animals a good life.

"We have worked really hard so it works," she said.

The facility also serves as a place for teenagers to spend time and learn about caring for animals. They learn about respect, compassion and a hard work ethic.

"I can think of a couple in my mind right now that we have here," Moore said. "If it weren't for this place, I don't know where they'd be."

She said the teens are worried, since the rescue association has had no luck finding a new home.

"They worry about what's gonna happen," Moore said.
