Fake soup can full of jewelry accidentally donated to charity

09:12 AM PDT on Thursday, May 29, 2008

By KGW Staff

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A Vancouver woman accidentally donated a fake soup can full of her family heirlooms to the Food Bank.

The can was actually a well-disguised jewelry box meant to be used to protect valuables and her wedding ring was in there, too.

And Theresa Hekel had forgotten about it.

So when she emptied her cupboard of canned goods to give to charity, she grabbed the jewelry box, too.

After she donated the supplies, Hekel realized her mistake and tried to get the jewelry back, but it was already gone as the charity had distributed the supplies to local food banks.

Hekel said it looks like a tomato soup can and feels like it’s made of metal, but there’s a lining on the inside and a secret compartment.

The Salvation Army alerted area food banks to be on the lookout for the fake tomato soup can, but so far, they have not found it.
