SEATTLE - "There's never been anything like this, the people have always been really nice. There's kids, there's a lot of animals," says Sarah Thorsnes, who has a remarkably upbeat attitude as she reflects on the events that put her in a hospital bed.

Two people hit in shooting at Folklife Festival

On Saturday, she and her boyfriend Joshua Penaluna joined tens of thousands of people enjoying music here at the Northwest Folklife Festival, an event they've attended for years.

But around 6:30 Saturday night, they noticed two men standing near them were beginning to argue.

"Two guys kind of were kind of running through and tripping over the people. It looked like one was chasing another one and they kind of fell over us," she said.

The couple was trying to move out of the way, when a single gunshot rang out.

"I heard the gun shot and then I felt my arm hurt, a lot. And I knew we had to get out of here," said Joshua.

A single bullet went through Joshua's arm, and lodged itself in Sarah's leg.

"I saw all the blood and I saw a hole in my leg so I knew I had been shot and people were all yelling at me to sit down," said Sarah.

Police at the festival heard the gunshot, and managed to catch the suspect within minutes. They say the suspect actually has a concealed weapons permit and was carrying the gun in an ankle holster.

Sarah and Joshua realize despite their wounds, they are exceptionally lucky the bullet didn't do more damage.

"I got powder burns on the upper part of my arm as well, and that's about a foot away from our chest," said Joshua.

Sarah Thorsnes recovers in the hospital after she was shot while attending the Folklife Festival in Seattle.

"And I feel really lucky that he was there to catch part of the impact," said Sarah.

Sarah says doctors have told her unless there are unforeseen complications, the bullet will likely remain in her leg for the rest of her life.

On Sunday, mounted police were brought in to heighten the law enforcement profile at the Follife Festival.

There was also an effort to partition some of the larger spaces so crowd size would be more manageable.
