Ballard's old Denny's headed for demolition

The former Denny's sits boarded up on 15th and Market Street in Ballard.

SEATTLE - An old Denny's restaurant in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle is still a designated landmark, but a key panel has decided not to keep it from being demolished.

The city's Landmarks Preservation Board voted unanimously on Wednesday against imposing any controls on the boarded-up 44-year-old building. Board members decided there was no economically viable way to save it.

Preservation activists say the building's swooping roof line was a notable example of Googie architecture. That style is named for a Sunset Strip coffee shop dating from 1949.

Opponents have scorned the building as an eyesore that is tacky at best.

A development partnership is planning an eight-story condominium and retail complex at the site.
