SEATTLE - King County sheriff's spokesman John Urquhart said Monday that deputies are accepting the explanation of an Issaquah man who says he spent several days unconscious in a ravine.

Michael Schreck, 47, managed to walk home late Monday night.

"We got a call from the family last night. Michael had walked in the door about 11:00 and was fine," said Urquhart.

Schreck had left his home to go jogging on the trails on Cougar Mountain at about 7:15 a.m. Friday.  His wife called police about 11 p.m. when she hadn't heard from him.

Schreck told his family that he had decided to go on a long run from Cougar Mountain to Squak Mountain.

According to a statement from the family, somewhere on Squak Mountain Schreck slipped and fell and was knocked unconscious. At some point he rolled under a log and covered himself with leaves.

On Monday he managed to hike out and tried hitchhiking on Highway 900, with no success.

He walked back to Cougar Mountain to get his car, but it had been towed, so he walked home.

He did not require medical attention.

Nearly 100 volunteers canvassed the park's 11 miles of trails over the weekend.

"Let's not forget the 200-plus Search & Rescue volunteers who gave up their weekend to spend countless hours looking for Mr. Schreck," King County Sheriff Sue Rahr said in a press release. "These unsung heroes leave their families for days at a time, often in very inclement weather, to search for those in peril. They really deserve our thanks."
