Police say the man was leaving Angie's Tavern in the 4900 block of Rainier Ave. S. just after midnight when he was confronted by the two suspects.

A witness said one suspect pulled a gun and pointed at the victim's stomach. There was a struggle and the victim was shot twice in the torso.

The victim's friend came out of the tavern as the assault was occurring and he also struggled with the suspects, but was not injured.

The suspects fled on foot through the alley just north of the tavern.

Police were questioning witnesses.

A police dog was called in but failed to locate the suspects.

"It's a little preliminary at this point to make any sort of assumptions as to what motivated this," said Lt. Eric Sano. "We know there was some sort of argument, some sort of altercation."

A gang unit was on the scene.

"But that doesn't necessarily mean that this was gang-related," said Sano.

The victims was taken to Harborview Medical Center and is expected to survive.
