NEAR CHIMACUM, Wash. – A Good Samaritan put his life on the line to save a woman inside a burning home Wednesday, but was unable to save her.

"It's a shame to go the way she did. I don't wish that on nobody," said Jerry Bundy, the victim's brother-in-law.

Firefighters responded at about 11 a.m. to the fire 4655 W. Valley Road just outside Chimacum, but they were already beaten there by the Samaritan, who was making deliveries at the time.

A spokesperson for East Jefferson Fire and Rescue says the man stopped, spotted the woman inside and went in to get her out of the house. He suffered burns to his arm and hands.

Firefighters arrived, but it was too late. The 74-year-old woman died of her injuries.

The victim's husband was at the store getting prescriptions when it happened, according to Bundy.

The Good Samaritan was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Firefighters say the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
