Man steals car from coffee shop, runs from cops

EVERETT, Wash. - People in Everett had a scare Wednesday morning when a man stole a car and lead police on a chase.
It all began when the man went into Seabrook Assisted Living and Retirement Residence, asking for a tour and a cup of coffee. Workers realized something wasn't right and called police.
After muttering some sort of threat to one of the workers, investigators say the man walked down the street to a cafe.
"And he said, 'I need to get my car jumped' and she's like, 'Well give me a second," said Jessie Hatch.
Hatch says when her co-worker turned around, the man attacked.
"That's when he grabbed her like this from behind and just tackled her down to the ground and then he took off with her car," she said.
Sheriff's deputies gave chase through south Everett.
"He was driving too fast for us so we backed off, not wanting to further endanger the public," said Sgt. Dave Casey.
But the driver kept on speeding, putting lives at risk as he zoomed past a day care center, where parents were dropping off their children.
"One of the parents almost got hit by the car that was racing down our road," said Julie Statham.
When the street came to a dead end, the driver went off road.
"Went straight down and crashed the car and went down through the Lowell area," said Statham.
Deputies say he took off running.
But with the help of a police K-9 and a watchful neighbor, they tracked him down and arrested him.
And while the victim's car took a pretty good beating, the woman wasn't seriously hurt.
"Just scared the living... um ... out of her, you know?" said Hatch.
The man could face charges of robbery, assault and fleeing police.
Editor's note: In an earlier version of this story, the assisted living facility was incorrectly identified as Garden Court Senior Living Community. As stated in this corrected version, the incident began at Seabrook Assisted Living and Retirement Residence.
