Street racing suspected in traffic death outside Yelm

04:27 PM PDT on Sunday, May 18, 2008

Associated Press

YELM, Wash. - Street racing has been linked to a traffic death about five miles southeast of Yelm, and vehicular homicide charges are being considered.

According to a Washington State Patrol report, alcohol also was involved in the crash late Saturday afternoon.

Troopers report that 20-year-old Daniel J. Ditton of Yelm died when a 2000 Ford Explorer in which he was riding overturned. The driver, 38-year-old Kolene J. Wengelewski of Yelm, and a 5-year-old boy were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The other driver, 18-year-old Timothy D. Bradley of Roy, escaped injury in a 1982 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck.

Investigators believe Bradley and Wengelewski were racing before the Explorer went out of control and overturned at an intersection. It's being investigated as vehicular homicide.
