Tacoma police chase ends with one man critical, another in jail

TACOMA, Wash. - A high-speed car chase in Tacoma ended in the chilly waters of Puget Sound, with one man in critical condition and another man in jail.
It was originally reported that the passenger in the car had died, but Tacoma Police say he is in the hospital.
Witnesses say they watched as the car came screaming past them.
"We were at the stop sign on Grandview and he just flew past us and I was like 'Oh my God, he must be going like 200 miles an hour.' It was crazy and then eight cops cars were flying behind him," said Jessica Saugen.
"We couldn't tell that it was even a car because it was just like a big flash of light that came down really fast and if someone were turning right there he would totally have killed them," said Rachelle Murray.
Tacoma police say they tried to pull the driver over because the car may have been stolen. The driver took off. He was going so fast and it became so dangerous, police pulled back.
"So at that point we just broke it off because of the speed and the danger he was causing running lights," said Mark Fulghum of the Tacoma Police Dept.
The driver then headed toward the marina south of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and apparently took a wrong turn. The car flew into the water and quickly sank. The driver managed to get out on his own but not the passenger.
"Unfortunately there was a passenger inside with him also and it took a little longer to get that person out too," said Fulghum.
The passenger was taken to the hospital in bad shape. The driver was booked into the Pierce County Jail for investigation of vehicular assault and eluding police.
Formal charges are expected on Monday.
