Coast Guard tows disabled Seattle-based cruise ship

01:44 PM PDT on Monday, May 12, 2008

Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Coast Guard on Sunday was towing a disabled cruise ship to Juneau's Auke Bay.

The Coast Guard cutter Liberty assisted the 143-foot Spirit of Columbia, which lost power to both generators Saturday night with 89 passengers on board.

Coast Guard officials say the cruise ship, operated by Cruise West of Seattle, also was operating on one of two propellor engines when it ran into trouble near Warm Springs Bay about 80 miles south of Juneau.

The ship's crew repaired the generators, but the vessel still is operating on just one propellor.

There are no reported injuries on board the Spirit of Columbia.
