Moses Lake weighs bid for NASCAR racetrack

08:56 AM PDT on Thursday, April 26, 2007

Associated Press

MOSES LAKE, Wash. - First NASCAR officials tried to build a racetrack in Snohomish County. When opposition there proved too strong, they turned to Kitsap County. That proposal also got nowhere in the Legislature, so NASCAR officials are looking elsewhere and the Moses Lake City Council and mayor are interested.

At a recent council meeting, Covey says a location between Moses Lake and George near Interstate 90 in the center of the state might work. He says a NASCAR track would boost the tourism industry in the area.

Centralia also has been mentioned for what would be the first NASCAE racetrack in the Pacific Northwest. International Speedway Corporation plans to spend $186 million, but the remaining $180 million in estimated construction cost would come from public funds.

When Moses Lake City Council member Jon Lane asked how the town would come up with that money, the mayor said he didn't know.
