Old school computers found dumped on Yelm trail
05:39 PM PDT on Thursday, April 24, 2008
YELM, Wash. – Police are trying to figure out who dumped over two dozen computers and other pieces of electronic equipment in the wood near Yelm.
Two weeks ago, the Thurston county family was Geocaching – basically going on a treasure hunt with a GPS device. But, instead of treasure, they found about 30 computers, monitors and other electronic junk dumped on a Weyerhaeuser logging road about 10 miles south of Yelm.
"It's just sad. I don't know how to describe it," said the mother, who does not want to be identified, noticed the equipment all had something in common. They had stickers and other markings indicating they had come from the Yelm School District.

Yelm's superintendent took a look and confirmed that the computers once belonged to the district. Using the serial numbers on the computers, the district says it sold them in 2002 – information that will be shared with authorities.
"What we have here is somebody who's a creep, who basically decides they're going to befoul the woods to save a couple of dollars," said Dr. Alan Burke, superintendent.
While the computers are no longer school property, Burke says if the county won't clean it up, he'll make sure the district does.
