Firefighters stand outside the Stephenson East dorm on WSU's campus where small fires were set and students were evacuated for a couple of hours early Monday morning.
Police arrested 21-year-old David Patrick Miner of Tacoma and 18-year-old freshman Ian J. Copland of Aberdeen on Monday for investigation of arson and reckless burning. Both have been released following appearances in Whitman County Superior Court.
Copland is the son of Grays Harbor District Court Judge Thomas A. Copland, who hears cases in Montesano. When the father was told of the arrest, he responded, "Oh my god." He would not comment further for lack of information.
Most of the fires were in trash bins and stairways. No injuries or major damage was reported, but a dormitory complex with more than 900 students was evacuated.
