Child's mother lashes out at man for staying silent about remains

11:12 AM PDT on Thursday, April 20, 2006

KING Staff reports

LAKEWOOD - Adre'Anna Jackson's mother has plenty to say about a man who claims he found the remains of the 10-year-old girl weeks ago but failed to report it to police.

“I get along with all walks of life, been very civil to everybody, helped everybody I could, and this is what I get,” said Yvette Gervais.

Spencer Grant said he was afraid to tell police what he found because he had outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Gervais is angry.

“He could have made an anonymous phone call, wouldn't have mattered what standing you're in," she said. "The police even said 'you could have come up to us with a needle in your arm. That's not what the problem is. We want to find the child.'"

Grant said weeks ago, he was walking along a trail when he discovered the remains.

"I started looking for some of my clothes I thought might be laying out there. I lifted up the stick and I seen what I thought was a dog back of a dog bone. Then I lifted it up a little higher and I seen it was a human skull," he said.

In his interview with KING 5 News, Grant said from the Pierce County Jail that he later did suspect it was Jackson. He even claims to have told 15 to 20 friends about the partial skeleton right after he made the discovery, but nobody reported it.

Gervais said if it's true that up to 20 people knew about the child's remains, something is definitely wrong.

"If you can't stand up for an innocent life, you're doing something wrong. Shame on you," she said.

Grant also said he found some children's clothing in the area. The Lakewood Police Department cannot yet confirm how the clothes might be connected, but the department has sent them in for forensic testing.

While Gervais is disturbed by Grant's admission, she believes Adre'Anna's killer is still out there.

"Hopefully there's some DNA," she said. "Whoever did it, you're just greedy, foul. We know you're not all there."

Grant is only a witness in the case. He is not a suspect because he was in jail when Jackson disappeared.
