Crane collapses through building on Lake Union
10:34 PM PDT on Wednesday, March 28, 2007
SEATTLE - A 14-ton maritime crane collapsed onto a building on Seattle's Lake Union around Wednesday noon.
KING
The crane, located at Alliance Yacht Sales (in the 2400 block of Westlake Avenue North), folded down and the arm of the crane crashed into a storage shed.
The crane has not been used to remove boats and yachts from the water for some time. A leak in the hydraulic system caused the crane to bend.
According to witnesses, it took an hour for the crane to bend all the way over.
Video
Workers said the crane was at "a weird angle" when they arrived at work in the morning.
The crane owner is responsible for cleanup and removal of the fallen crane. Heavy equipment brought in to get the crane back up was unsuccessful. The effort will continue Thursday with a bigger crane.
No injuries were reported.
