SEATTLE – The FBI says a Whatcom County man wanted for shooting a New Mexico sheriff's deputy has been shot and killed after a run-in with the law.

The Bellingham Herald reports 43-year-old Kurt Sohrbeck died in a shooting Wednesday involving the Otero County Sheriff's Department.

Sohrbeck had been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting Sgt. Robert Shepperd in the head, chest and arm earlier this month.  The shooting happened when Sohrbeck was being chased on some back roads.

Investigators found that Sohrbeck has extensive criminal history.
