BELLEVUE, Wash. – Bellevue is the latest Puget Sound area city with plans to add cameras to catch red light runners at intersections.
The Seattle Times reports six intersections will get the red light cameras in addition to three new speed cameras located near elementary schools.
The cameras will be added in the next three to six months, although police have not decided exactly which intersections will get the red light cameras.
Under the one year pilot program approved by the Bellevue City Council Monday, drivers who are caught by the cameras will get a $124 ticket. Drivers will only be given a warning if caught in the first 30 days after the cameras go into operation.
The cameras are expected to bring the city $827,000 in fines, but city officials say the purpose is to increase safety, not bring in money.
Seattle, Lynnwood and Puyallup also have red light cameras. The cameras are so effective in Puyallup that the city is extending the 30 day warning period from the end of March to the end of April so drivers can get used to them.
The speed cameras will be installed in school zones outside Stevenson, Lake Hills and Sunset elementary schools.
Here are the locations police are looking at for the red light cameras:
Westbound NE 8th Street at 112th Avenue NE
Westbound NE 4th Street, at the southbound Interstate 405 offramp
Westbound NE12th Street, at 116th Avenue NE
Northbound and southbound 148th Avenue NE, at Bellevue-Redmond Road
